Aboriginal Day festivities in Island Park

By Robin Dudgeon, Portage Daily Graphic

People came from miles around to celebrate the 15th annual Aboriginal Day hosted by the Portage Friendship Centre, Thursday.

The event in Island Park included performances by Johnny Dietrich and Jason Lepine, traditional dancing, drumming by the Horse Creek Singers, as well as performances by Kristi McKernan, Brothers of Stone, Second Class Hero's, and North Wolf Ojibway.

Shirley Bernard, executive director of the Portage Friendship Centre, said she was very proud of all the staff, board members, and volunteers who made the event a success.

She noted it is a spiritual day that many Aboriginal people have different views on.

"I was brought up that Aboriginal Day is where everybody unites, everybody mingles, you visit, you celebrate, you thank the Creator for everything that he's given to us. Today He gave us a beautiful day," said Bernard. "It was so nice to see so many people out here celebrating with us. It was beautiful."
