About 30 people came out to the walk along the path at Island Park to show their support and raise awareness about the issues of mental health in the community.
The Working Together, Walking Together Towards Mental Health Wellness walk, which was organized by Canadian Mental Health Association, coincided with the first annual provincial walk of the same day.
"All CMHAs in the region are part of this provincial walk," said CMHA Central Region activities co-ordinator Jocelyn Robinson. "It's to raise awareness of mental wellness."
Portage la Prairie MLA Ian Wishart also took part in the walk and said in his opening remarks, there is a need to bring the issue of mental health out in the open so people can talk about it, adding that this walk was one way to do that.
With RHA Southern Manitoba, community mental health worker Jeff Hunter who is based in Portage, said the value of physical activity towards helping improve mental health and physical health can't be underestimated. He added studies have shown how physical exercise can help improve one's wellbeing overall.
