Phillies roll to gold in Notre Dame
The Portage Phillies have been red-hot to start the 2012 season, and they continued their streak in Notre Dame over the weekend.
Portage, already 3-0 in Winnipeg Fastball League play, won all four games at a tournament in Notre Dame en route to taking the title.
Portage opened with a 3-1 win over the Notre Dame Spades as Jay Dewis and Brendan Smith each bopped home runs in support of pitcher Gregg Waldvogel.
The Phillies then thumped the Notre Dame Clubs 8-1 with a homer from Tanner Waldvogel. Guest player Trevor MacDonald got the win.
Next, the Phillies got past the Clanwilliam Grays 11-7 with Tanner Waldvogel and MacDonald combining for the win. Devon Smith was three-for-three with three doubles while Dewis and Bryce Graham were also three-for-three.
Portage then wrapped up the title against Devils Lake NDTC from North Dakota with a 7-3 victory. Rob Olson and Tanner Waldvogel blasted home runs while Gregg Waldvogel pitched for the win.
Olson, who also serves as the team's coach, said the influx of youth to the team has been beneficial early on in the season.
"We've got some really good young guys," said Olson. "We've got three first year players, basically. They're all doing quite well.
The Phillies will be in action in Headingley on Wednesday night as they face the Sagkeeng Dirt Dogs and Hollow Water Panthers.
