Cuthbert presents to council on community gardens 0
By Robin Dudgeon...Yvette Cuthbert speaking to city council at Monday's meeting about the prospect of creating a community garden in the city's north end. She approached council to find some appropriate land for the project.
Community gardens may be a feature in the north end of Portage la Prairie in the near future. Yvette Cuthbert gave a presentation to city council on behalf of a group looking to establish one such garden in the city.
"We basically would like to start a community garden in town. We're looking for free land to have this community garden on. I would like it to be centrally located, if it's not centrally located then it would be great if we could have little pockets throughout the city," said Cuthbert.
The site suggested to them by city administration was just north of the BDO Centre for the Community on 3rd St. NW, but they are open to other locations as well. The plan Cuthbert presented to council on behalf of the group was based on the 3rd St. location.
The plan for the site would include a 1,200 gallon water tank that would collect water off the roof of the near by community hall, as well as a shed to store tools that had a lock with a code. The site would also feature 4x25 ft raised beds, picnic tables, and a near by park would be an asset for families.
