German officials hope to extradite suspected body-parts killer Luka Magnotta to Canada within the next three weeks, Agence France-Presse reported Thursday.
The 29-year-old ex-porn actor and stripper was arrested in Berlin Monday following a six-day manhunt. He's suspected of murdering and dismembering his lover, Jun Lin, 33.
"We hope that he can be extradited between now and the end of the month," German government official Martin Steltner told AFP.
Canadian justice officials sent a formal extradition request to Germany and the process was to begin Thursday.
The two countries are said to have a comprehensive extradition treaty.
Magnotta faces charges including first-degree murder and indignity to a corpse after Lin, a Chinese university student, was stabbed to death with an ice pick and cut to pieces in a Montreal apartment on May 24.
His hand and foot were mailed to political parties in Ottawa. And police believe his other hand and foot were sent to two schools in Vancouver.
Lin's torso and other body parts were found in and near Magnotta's apartment.
Magnotta fled to Paris and then Berlin, triggering a massive international manhunt.
His case has made headlines around the world, and took a macabre twist when a video of what police say was the murder appeared on a gore website.
