Padres pounce on Pirates in season opener
The Portage Padres opened their sophomore Santa Clara Baseball League campaign on a winning note on Wednesday night, dropping the visiting Plumas Pirates 10-3 at Republic of Manitobah Park.
Kevin Terrick put together a dominating performance on the hill for the Padres, pitching the complete game while racking up nine strikeouts.
Kyle Hamilton and Blake Swedlo were offensive standouts for the Padres, with Hamilton going three-for-four with two singles and a home run, while Swedlo singled in all three of his at-bats. Meanwhile, Daylan Laramee was two-for-four with a double and a triple, while Landon Thomson put up a pair of singles in his three appearances.
The game was a tight affair for the first half, but Portage eventually began to shred the Plumas pitching, enjoying an offensive explosion in the fifth to help turn the tide.
Hamilton praised Terrick's performance as a steadying influence as the fielders and batters began to heat up.
"Pitching was really good today," said Hamilton. "We were getting through all of our small bloopers. Once we got on a roll, then we were really flying.
"It was close, then we had a really good inning and we got ahead."
As for his own performance, Hamilton hopes to tighten up in the field after committing a couple of errors, but was thrilled to get his round-tripper.
"It felt really good. I haven't gotten one in senior here before," said Hamilton.
Head coach Dean Dubois liked what he saw out of the club overall, considering there hasn't been much of an opportunity for the players to get together and practice.
"For their first time in the field, it looked not too bad," said Dubois. "If it's an indication of the year, it might be a good year, depending who shows up."
The Padres will continue to enjoy a home-heavy start to the season next Wednesday when the Neepawa Cubs come to town. Plumas will be back on the diamond much sooner, though, heading to Ste. Rose to face the Brewers on Friday night.
