RHA warns about summer illnesses
With summer just around the corner the Province of Manitoba and the Central Regional Health Authority wants Manitobans to be aware of a few common illnesses that become more prevalent during the warmer months.
These prevalent spring and summer illnesses that could put a damper on your summer include E. coli, Lyme disease, and West Nile virus.
West Nile virus is passed on to humans by a specific mosquito, the Culex tarsalis. But not everyone bitten by this mosquito will get West Nile virus.
"It's the type of infection where 90 per cent of the population would never know they were infected. A small percentage will develop what is called West Nile Fever and it is similar to any kind of flu like illness," said Dr. Shelley Buchan, medical officer of health for the Central Regional Health Authority.
