Kids in the area will have a chance to ride their bikes and win cool prizes with the 9th Portage Rotary bike-a-thon taking place on June 2.

Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. at the tennis courts for kids in grades one through six; kids then get a chance to drop off their pledge sheets and bike around the Island with other kids and win prizes like gift cards.

The RCMP will be doing a safety demonstration at 9:30 a.m. and the Junk Yard Dogs bike club will also be on site for the event.

The Portage Rotary Club recently revived the bike-a-thon as a fun family event that will get the young school kids out and biking together.

"This is back from the old days of Rotary, I think I rode in that bike-a-thon when I was a kid," said Rotary club member and bike-a-thon organizer Derek McCutcheon. "They did it a long time ago and it was always a good go. It was a good way to be involved with the community, it was a good thing to get the kids together."

Funds from the bike-a-thon will then be put towards local Rotary youth projects.

"I'm looking forward to it. It's going to be good for family, it's going to be good for the community, and hopefully it's good for weather," said McCutcheon.
