St. Claude badminton duo fourth at provincials 0
St. Claude's only entry into the provincial badminton championship in Carman made an impact over the weekend.
The girls' doubles team of Jocelyne Robidoux and Kalene Mangin finished fourth in their division at the tournament, which Mangin came as a shock to the pair, considering they became a team for enjoyment more than anything.
"We didn't expect to get fourth place or anything," said Mangin. "We weren't even expecting to make it to the second day.
"We're not a club team or anything. We're from a single-A school. We did it for fun, to be honest and it turned out really well."
Playing as a single player in 2011, Robidoux narrowly missed advancing out of her pool with a 4-3 record, as she lost on a tiebreaker. Mangin said even with that success, they decided to see what they could do as a pair, and in the end, were able to improve.
"We're both pretty strong athletes and we had played together on sports teams," said Mangin. "We enjoy playing sports together, so we figured we might as well give it a shot and see what happens, and it turned out great."
