Junior Trojans off to strong start

The Portage Junior Trojans basketball team is off to a strong start to its Spring Rising Stars League season.

The Trojans, made up of players in Grades 7 through 9, have blazed to a 4-1 record after skunking Selkirk 72-24 on Monday night. Joey McNabb led the way with 18 points, followed by Olavo Cordeiro with 16 and Drew Lambert with 11.

The win was the team's first blowout of the season, as they had only allowed 16 more points than they'd allowed through the first four games of the year.

Head coach Chris Utz said the team, which also played an eight-game fall season, has come along since beginning training.

"The best thing for us is playing as a team, moving the ball better and tough defence," said Utz. "What's changed is the culture, and everyone is scoring evenly and playing unselfishly."

Utz said the team is able to shut down opponents and the charge back to score.

"We have an extremely strong offence because of out defence and that leads to start our offence," said Utz. "(Our transition game) is the best in the province."
