The PCI Saints captured the Double AA division crown at the Saints Classic over the weekend.

The girls took to the field at Republic Park and played four games en route to the title.

Cam Asham, head coach of the Saints fastpitch team, said that he was happy with the way the girls play despite some inconsistent hitting over the weekend.

"We ended up third in our round robin pool so that put us in for the Double A event. We won that part of the draw," said Asham. "The girls played well for the most part and we were happy with how we finished."

The Saints began the tournament against Vincent Massey winning 10-0 in their first game. Asham said the team got off to the right start, exhibiting some strong hitting and rock solid defence en route to the win.

Next up, the Saints went up against Nellie McClung from Manitou and came up short in a 7-4 loss.

"It was a strange thing where we hit the ball well in that first game when we won 10-0 and we couldn't put the ball in play for the second game," said Asham.

Despite a solid game from Leah Robb, pitcher for the Saints, having a solid showing, the Saints weren't able to get the bat on the ball.

Still, the Saints were in position to play the semifinal against Boissevain and managed to squeak out a 4-3 victory to take them into the finals.

"We had a pretty good defensive game in that one. Leah pitched well and we made the routine plays. It was a good finish," said Asham.

With two outs in the top of the fifth and a couple runners on base, the Saints were able to hold onto the lead despite leading 4-2 at the beginning of the frame.

The Saints faced Neelin in the final and ended up blowing them out, en route to a 16-4 win.

Asham said the team is still trying to iron out their kinks on offence as they look to hit the ball like they did in Game 1 and the final.

With the tournament over, the Saints will continue Zone Four action with a home game against Morden at 4:15 p.m.
