Portage la Prairie's MCC Thrift Shop is having a special sale day Tuesday to support Portage's Habitat for Humanity project.
Proceeds from the MCC store's annual Habitat sale benefit the local charity.
"Habitat for Humanity does a lot of work for local families here in town," said Kevin Hamm, who is the manager of MCC Thrift Shop in Portage. "A lot of the same families they work with are our same customers and our volunteers. We have had the opportunity to receive volunteer hours from some of the families that have been working Sweat Equity (time) ... We have seen the positive impact (Habitat) have made in our community and we are happy to support their work."
The MCC store previously had a sale day to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Portage and raised $3,500. For the Habitat Day, once again the MCC shop will be donating a guaranteed amount of $3,500 for the local cause.
In the previous seven years, the MCC store has donated roughly $30,000 to the Portage Habitat project local work.
The Habitat Day Sale runs Tues., May 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
"We have lots of special things we have saved up for Habitat (sale), and we are just busy right now filling up the store with lots of goodies for sale," Hamm said.
For Portage's Habitat For Humanity, Doug Halmarson said the MCC's support is appreciated.
"They take time out of their yearly schedule so they have a day to support the Habitat. We really appreciate it," he said.
Plans are moving along for the build of the new Habitat home at the corner of Sixth Street NE at 4th Avenue in Portage. It is expected by the end of next week the ground will be broken to start the project.
