Local teams take hardware at atom tourney 0
A trio of Central Plains teams took hardware at the Lions Atom Tournament at the PCU Centre on Sunday.
Portage #3 took the Lions Fellowship Trophy over Oakville with a 5-3 win. Portage #3 fell to Minot in its first game before defeating East End and Lac du Bonnet. They then got past Souris 5-3 in their first playoff game.
Oakville, meanwhile, lost to Portage #2 to open the weekend, but beat Gladstone and Riverton in advance of the playoffs. Once there, they eked past Portage #1 to qualify for the title game.
As well, MacGregor nabbed the PMHA President's Trophy with a 6-3 win over Minot. The Mustangs opened the tournament with a win over Brandon, and then lost to Swan Valley and Yorkton in group play before rebounding to beat Pinawa 7-1 in the playoff round.
Meanwhile, Gladstone wound up with the PMHA Co-ordinator's Trophy with a 4-2 doubling of Gimli. The Lakers started off the tournament in tough, dropping three-straight to Pinawa, Oakville and Riverton, but they bounced back to edge Lakeside 7-5 in their first playoff game.
Other winners included: Warroad, who defeated Kenora 5-0 for the Lions Director's Trophy; Yorkton, who downed Dauphin 3-1 for the Lions Governor's Trophy, and; Brandon, who beat Estevan 7-1 for the Lions Melvin Jones Trophy.
Other local teams, meanwhile, fell out of title contention earlier Sunday.
Portage #4 opened with a win over Estevan before losing to Portage #5 and Tri-Town. They then lost 7-2 to Minot in the first playoff game.
Portage #1 began with a loss to Swan Valley before defeating Brandon and Lakeside. They fell 3-2 to Oakville in their first playoff game.
Portage #2 opened with a win over Oakville before falling to Warroad and beating Pinawa. They dropped a 5-4 decision to Yorkton in their playoff opener.
Portage #5 dropped Gimli in its opener before defeating Portage #4 and losing to Tri-Town. From there, the club lost 3-1 to Dauphin in the playoff round.
