A little scrapbook heaven right in Portage

Shelley Cook

One Portage woman has made her dreams come true by converting her living room into a specialty scrapbooking store in an effort to share her passion with other scrapbook enthusiasts and beginners in the area.

Jennifer Lambert operates Memories In Time Scrapbooking out of her Peter St., Peony Farm home. The mother of three boys said she wanted to make the popular pastime more accessible and affordable to Portage residents.

"I really wanted it to be a feel-good store," she said. "Where people come out of here feeling good and happy, lighthearted and inspired. That's the big thing, inspired."

Lambert said one of the reasons she decided to open her shop was because she was tired of having to go to Winnipeg to find the products that she wanted for her own hobby.

"When I did go (to Winnipeg) I felt like I needed to spend a hundred or two hundred dollars cause I never knew when I'd be back," she said. "And now people can come in and just have the freedom of only having to spend ten dollars at a time."

Though she only took up scrapbooking six months ago, Lambert is already an expert at the craft. She's created many sample scrapbooks that she displays throughout her shop in an effort to not only give customers ideas, but also to show them how certain products, like glittery fluff, work. She says she tries to make each scrapbook as interactive as she can, creating little pockets and envelopes that people can pull out and open.

"I really have to give my sister a lot of credit, because she's the one that got me into scrapbooking, and I just fell in love with it," she said.

Many of the products that line the shelves of Lambert's shop are from Graphic 45, an award-winning scrapbook and crafting company based out of Portland, Oregon. Lambert says she tries to specialize in products that aren't stocked in other stores in Portage or Winnipeg.

"I didn't want to offer anything that Portage already had," she said. "I just really wanted it to be different, somewhere where you could go and say, 'wow, I didn't know you could get this here.'"

So far that's exactly the reaction she's received from her clientele.

Lambert's shop boasts lower prices than many other scrapbook and craft shops, because, she says, she wants people to be able to enjoy the hobby without spending an arm and a leg.

"It doesn't have to cost you a fortune to make a book, it can be as expensive as you want, or as inexpensive as you want," she said.

Aside from specialty scrapbook supplies, Lambert suggests using things like envelopes, paper bags and standard tags to for scrapbooking. She says most supplies, like a pad of specialty paper, will last for more than one project, so people shouldn't get bogged down with the cost if they enjoy the hobby.

Lambert says she hopes to build her clienetele base so that she can one day open a shop in downtown Portage. In the fall she plans to teach scrapbooking classes.
