Calling all volunteers: The Potato Festival needs you!
The Portage la Prairie Potato Festival is just a little more than a month away and volunteers are still desperately needed to make sure that this year's festival is the best one yet.
On Saturday, August 6 the PCU Centre grounds will be a buzz with activity. Couch potatoes be warned, on this day you're not going to want to miss out on the eighth annual Potato Festival.
This year's Potato Festival kicks off bright and early with the United Way Pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. and continues well into the night with live entertainment, including Canadian rock legends Honeymoon Suite. In between the pancakes and the rockers is a fun-filled day of family friendly activities.
The best part about this year's Potato Festival, is that it's almost entirely free. Diane Todoruk, festival committee member, says the only thing that will cost festival-goers any money is a one-dollar admission fee into the flea market which will go to the Portage Big Brothers and Sisters organization.
Todoruk says the committee is still looking for volunteers to help manage Portage's biggest annual festival. She credits the volunteers who donate their time every year for being the lifeblood of the event, and this year is no exception.
"Even different clubs can volunteer if they're interested," she said. "Even if a business who can't afford to donate money can send out a couple volunteers for three hours each, like really, that means more to us than anything right now."
Volunteer shifts range from anything to sitting at the info booth to just walking around the grounds. Anyone who can spare three hours to volunteer will be put to work.
Todoruk said the festival committee is also still looking for donations. In-kind donations, like the ones they've already received from local businesses like Dairy Queen, the FCC and Blue Moon, she said, have helped tremendously.
"In-kind donations mean as much to us as monetary donations do," she exclaimed.
