The Portage la Prairie Mall has a new addition to their family. Birds Bees and Babies had a quiet opening on Feb. 22 and owner Jennifer Roy is very pleased with it's reception.

Roy said the first week was very good and she's already had a lot of traffic and feedback.

The little shop has maternity, nursing wear and of course plenty of baby clothes ranging from premature sizes up to toddlers.

Roy has wanted to start a business for a while now, and the idea for the baby shop came from personal experience. "When I was pregnant with my daughter it was an idea my husband came up with because we had a hard time finding anything in the area," she said.

"I did spend a year researching," Roy said. Part of that research was emailing companies for product descriptions, and another part was simply testing out different products on her own daughter to see how she liked them.

The most challenging part of Roy's journey so far has been ensuring her store has what Portage wants. "With the feedback I've had in the last week I know I've done well," she said.

Right now the store carries a diverse selection of clothing, accessories and toys. Roy said she's done her best to keep her products as local as possible, but that having reasonable prices has been a big priority as well. Incorporating organic products was also on Roy's mind when she put together the store. Roy has some organic cotton onesies as well as organic wraps from Sling Sisters, a duo based out of Winnipeg.

The store even has a corner dedicated to kids with sample retro style toys by Melissa and Doug for kids to play with while mothers shop.

Roy's daughter, who helped inspire the store, loves to be with mom at work. "She loves it to a point where I can't have her here too often, she's just too wound up," Roy said with a laugh.

The store will celebrate its official grand opening April 2.
