Organizers getting ready for Terry Fox Run
Portage la Prairie walkers, runners and joggers will once again be on the mark to kick off the annual Terry Fox Run.
The event will take place at Island Park starting at 1 p.m. on Sept. 19.
"Terry Fox started this whole thing not for himself, but with the hope of helping other people," said Judy Gushel, who is leading the Terry Fox six-member team for Portage. "I think he was such a generous and courageous soul that I would never want to see this run cancelled."
Gushel has been affected by cancer for five years.
"For the past seven years, I have participated at the run at Yellowquill School," she said, adding she will be taking part in the event at Island Park this year.
Evelyn Rheaume is the volunteer co-ordinator for the Portage walk. All funds for the Terry Fox event benefit research into finding a cure for cancer. Rheaume said participants can show their support any way they like.
"They can run. They can walk," she said, adding some individuals like to bike on the route. "It's not a competitive race or anything like that. They can go around the route we have set out as many times as they like."
