New lounge possible at Portage Canad Inns

The curling club lounge at Canad Inns in Portage la Prairie may soon be home to a new tavern styled bar, which would be open all year long.

Thirty-five members of the Portage Curling Club (PCC) met at their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday night and unanimously voted in favour of a motion to proceed with finalizing a letter of understanding with the hotel to change the lease agreement and lounge facilities.

President of the PCC, Tom Hyde, said there is still some fine tuning and legal opinion needed on the draft proposal, but barring any major problems in that process renovations on the facility could start within the next few weeks.

Hyde said no changes are planned for the rink, and pointed out that having a curling club attached to a hotel is something unique to Portage, and the new lounge will only help to bring an expanded interest to the club.

"It's a win-win," said Hyde. "We're going to continue to run our events as we have, and be able make use of a more modern lounge facility upstairs for our guests as well as hotel guests."
